Whitney Houston, the multimillion-selling singer who emerged in the 1980s as one of her generation's greatest R & B voices, only to deteriorate through years of cocaine use and an abusive marriage, died on Saturday in Los Angeles. Her death was confirmed by her publicist, Kristen Foster.
She was 48, and had been in Los Angeles on Saturday to sing for the annual pre-Grammy party held at the Beverly Hilton hotel by Clive Davis, the founder of Arista Records, who had been her pop mentor.
Ms. Houston was declared dead in her room at the hotel about 4 p.m. after paramedics from the Beverly Hills Fire Department spent close to 30 minutes trying to revive her, the authorities said. There was no immediate word on the cause of her death.
The streets in front of the Beverly Hilton, already crowded because of the Grammy Awards party taking place there, were swarmed with reporters and fans, drawn by the news of this latest high-profile pop star dying in Los Angeles.
Partygoers and celebrities continued to arrive for Mr. Davis's party while fans stood behind a rope trying to take pictures. Dressed in evening gowns and tuxedos, people stepped out of limousines at the curbside and streamed into the party.
From the first, Ms. Houston had the talent, looks and pedigree of a pop superstar. She was the daughter of Cissy Houston, a gospel and pop singer who had backed up Aretha Franklin, and the cousin of Dionne Warwick. (Ms. Franklin is Ms. Houston's godmother.)
Ms. Houston's range spanned five octaves, and her voice was plush, vibrant and often spectacular. She could pour on the exuberant flourishes of gospel or peal a simple pop chorus; she could sing sweetly or unleash a sultry rasp.
Dressed in everything from formal gowns to T-shirts, she cultivated the image of a fun-loving but ardent good girl, the voice behind songs as perky as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" and as torchy as what became her signature song, a version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."
But by the mid-1990s, even as she was moving into acting with films like "The Bodyguard" and "The Preacher's Wife," she became what she described, in a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey, as a "heavy" user of marijuana and cocaine. By the 2000s she was struggling; her voice grew smaller, scratchier and less secure, and her performances grew erratic.
All of Ms. Houston's studio albums were million-sellers, and two have sold more than 10 million copies in the United States alone: Her 1985 debut album and the 1992 soundtrack to "The Bodyguard," which contains "I Will Always Love You."
But her marriage to the singer Bobby Brown - which was, at one point, documented in a Bravo reality television series, "Being Bobby Brown" - grew miserable, and in the 2000s, her singles slipped from the top 10. Ms. Houston became a tabloid subject; the National Enquirer ran a photo of her bathroom showing drug paraphernalia. And each new album - "Just Whitney" in 2002 and "I Look to You" in 2009 - became a comeback.
At Central Park in 2009, singing for "Good Morning America," her voice was frayed, and on the world tour that followed the release of the album "I Look to You," she was often shaky.
Whitney Houston was born on Aug. 9, 1963, in Newark. She sang in church, and as a teenager in the 1970s and early 1980s, she worked as a backup studio singer and featured vocalist with acts including Chaka Khan, the Neville Brothers and Bill Laswell's Material.
Mr. Davis signed her after hearing her perform in a New York City nightclub, and spent two years supervising production of the album "Whitney Houston," which was released in 1985. It placed her remarkable voice in polished, catchy songs that straddled pop and R & B, and it included three No. 1 singles: "Saving All My Love for You," "How Will I Know" and "The Greatest Love of All."
Because Ms. Houston had been credited on previous recordings, including a 1984 duet with Teddy Pendergrass, she was ruled ineligible for the best new artist category of the Grammy Awards; the eligibility criteria have since been changed. But "Saving All My Love for You" won her first Grammy award, for best female pop vocal performance, an award she would win twice more.
Her popularity soared for the next decade. Her second album, "Whitney," in 1987, became the first album by a woman to enter the Billboard charts at No. 1, and it included four No. 1 singles. She shifted her pop slightly toward R & B on her third album, "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight," in 1990, which had three more No. 1 singles.
For much of the 1990s, she turned to acting, bolstered by her music. She played a pop diva in "The Bodyguard," and its soundtrack album - including the hits "I Will Always Love You," "I'm Every Woman," "I Have Nothing" and "Run To You" - went on to sell 17 million copies in the United States. It won the Grammy for album of the year, and "I Will Always Love You" won record of the year (for a single). After making the films "Waiting To Exhale" in 1995 and "The Preacher's Wife" in 1996 - which gave her the occasion to make a gospel album - Ms. Houston resumed her pop career with "My Love Is Your Love" in 1998.
Ms. Houston married Mr. Brown in 1992, and in 1993 they had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who survives her. Ms. Houston's 2009 interview with Ms. Winfrey portrayed it as a passionate and then turbulent marriage, marred by drug use and by his professional jealousy, psychological abuse and physical confrontations. They divorced in 2007.
Her albums in the 2000s advanced a new persona for Ms. Houston. "Just Whitney," in 2002, was defensive and scrappy, lashing out at the media and insisting on her loyalty to her man.. Her most recent studio album, "I Look to You," appeared in 2009, and it, too, reached No. 1. The album included a hard-headed breakup song, "Salute," and a hymnlike anthem, "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." Ms. Houston sang, "I crashed down and I tumbled, but I did not crumble/I got through all the pain," in a voice that showed scars.
In Los Angeles on Saturday night, a number of other people were drawn to the hotel where Ms. Houston died to mourn.
"I want to show support because she inspired a lot of people, and nobody's perfect," said Lavetris Singleton. "But if we're not out here then she'll be forgotten. We are her legacy.
"I was in utter, total disbelief," she said. "Who was not a fan of Whitney Houston at some point? The song that always sticks in my mind was 'Greatest Love of All.' I remember singing that as a child, and all her hits, and then following her, even with her rise and fall with Bobby Brown and watching her reality show."
Besides her daughter, now 18, Ms. Houston is survived by her mother.
A woman who answered the telephone at the Edgewater, N.J., home of Ms. Houston's mother on Saturday night said she would not speak to reporters.

"Do you realize," sings Gretchen Lieberum, "that you have the most beautiful face? That we're floating in space? That happiness makes you cry?" With a $3000 budget, a plastic crown, a used $50 video camera and a diverse handful of Los Angelans, so begins this hauntingly beautiful cover of a 2002 song by the Flaming Lips.

The video for Gretchen Lieberum's take on the Flaming Lips song 'Do You Realize' was directed by Jacob Aaron Estes (Mean Creek) in three afternoons, with a three thousand dollar budget and no lights, shot with a used fifty dollar Canon Super 8mm film camera. With only two people on the small crew, the filmmakers and the artist traveled around Los Angeles through Silverlake, Echo Park, Chinatown, Downtown, Beverly Hills and South Central asking random people on the street for five minutes of their time to pose for a music video. With the exception of a few friends who let the filmmakers into their houses to film them and their children, all the subjects who generously posed for camera were friendly strangers. During the filming, each participant was passed a toy crown to place on their head and each subject then passed the crown off screen to the other side of frame-- to create an illusion in the editing room that the crown is being passed from person to person, starting with the artist in Echo Park, traveling to Santee Alley in the heart of Los Angeles' Garment District to Rodeo Drive and back again. Some of the subjects with more time on their hands to donate were then asked to attempt to lip sync the song, which the filmmakers played them on a cheap CD player and the participants had to learn the lyrics on the spot. The humanistic, equalizing quality of the video, dramatized by the passing of the crown from person to person was a visual-intellectual idea that came from the artist Gretchen herself, who was inspired by the themes of the song and by a friend of hers in Brooklyn named Ken Solomon who for years has been working on something called 'The Wig Project', photographing thousands of local residents posing for camera with the same Afro-wig. Neil Leslie Diamond (born on January 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter. As a successful pop music performer, Diamond scored a number of hits worldwide in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. According to David Wild, common themes in Diamond's songs are "a deep sense of isolation and an equal desire for connection. A yearning for home -- and at the same time, the allure of greater freedom. The good, the bad and the ugly about a crazy little thing called love."

As of 2001 Diamond has 115 million records sold worldwide, including 48 million records in the U.S. In terms of Billboard chart success, he is the third most successful Adult Contemporary artist ever, ranking behind only Barbra Streisand and Elton John.

Though his record sales declined somewhat after the 1980s, Diamond continues to tour successfully, and maintains a very loyal following. Diamond's songs have been recorded by a vast array of performers from many different musical genres.

Diamond was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984, in 2000 received the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award, and will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

"I Am...I Said" is a song written and recorded by Neil Diamond. Released as a single in March 1971, it was quite successful, at first slowly climbing the charts, then more quickly rising to number 4 on the U.S. pop singles chart by May 1971. It fared similarly across the Atlantic, reaching number 4 on the UK pop singles chart as well.

"I Am...I Said" took Diamond four months to compose. One of his most intensely personal efforts, it depicts the singer lost between two worlds: Well, I'm New York City born and raised But nowadays, I'm lost between two shores L.A.'s fine, but it ain't home — New York's home but it ain't mine no more ...

Verses start quietly in a low vocal range, half sung and half spoken, with a soft rock guitar and light strings backing. By the chorus climaxes, the vocals are much louder and higher in pitch, with horns, heavier drums and more strings joining in, but the singer even more uncertain: I am, I cried! I am, said I. And I am lost, and I can't even say why ...

"I Am...I Said" was later included on Diamond's November 1971 album Stones. The single version leads off the LP, while a reprise of the song, taken from midway to a variant ending with Diamond exclaiming "I am!", concludes.

Critical opinion on "I Am...I Said" has generally been good, with Rolling Stone calling its lyric excellent in a 1972 review, while The New Yorker used it to exemplify Diamond's songwriting opaqueness in a 2006 retrospective. A 2008 Diamond profile in The Daily Telegraph simply referred to the song's "raging existential angst," and Allmusic calls it "an impassioned statement of emotional turmoil ... very much in tune with the confessional singer/songwriter movement of the time."

The song garnered Diamond his first Grammy Awards nomination, for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

"I Am...I Said" has been included in live versions on Diamond's Hot August Night (from 1972, in a performance that Rolling Stone would later label "fantastically overwrought") and The Greatest Hits: 1966-1992 (from 1992), as well as in various compilations.

Recorded on February 1st, 2010, in the same studio as the original 25 years earlier (Henson Recording Studios, formerly A&M Recording Studios) "We Are The World 25 For Haiti", in which Jones and Richie serve as executive producers and producers, was created in collaboration with executive producers Wyclef Jean, Randy Phillips and Peter Tortorici; producers Humberto Gattica and RedOne; and co-producers Rickey Minor, Mervyn Warren and Patti Austin to benefit the Haitian earthquake relief efforts and the rebuilding of Haiti.

Academy Award-winning writer-director Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), whose own personal efforts as well as those of Artists for Peace and Justice have already saved countless lives in Haiti, filmed the private recording session to create the accompanying video and behind-the-scenes production, and serves as Film Director and as an Executive Producer with Jones, Richie, Jean, Phillips and Tortorici.

The 25th Anniversary recording features over 80 artists and performers. The recording of We Are The World 25 For Haiti embodied the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and generosity as the original recording 25 years ago. Every one of the artists who participated, regardless of genre or generation, walked into the room with their hearts and souls completely open to coming together to help the people of Haiti.

In 1976 Marvin Gayes marriage was about to collapse. He was also just about to be imprisoned because of non-paid child-support to his wife Anna. Reputedly Motown bailed Marvin out and he was suggested to leave US for a some time. Promoter Jeffrey Kruger arranged a European tour to start up in September 1976 and it also included a long waited visit to England for the first time in ten years.

This concert in question was held in 10th October before sell-out audience in Edenhall concert hall Amsterdam. The track listing is pretty much identical compared to the Album "Marvin Gaye - Live At The London Palladium!" which was recorded on the same tour seven days earlier. Only songs missing are "Trouble Man" and "God is Love". All the other tracks are exactly (although in different order) the same as on this DVD, even including the content of medleys. These Medleys are actually one of the biggest problems in this concert. In a way the whole concert is one gigantic medley, while atleast what I was expecting, were the full versions of the songs. If compared to the performances in the "Live in Montreux" DVD this concert feels pretty boring. Marvin himself explained the reason for these medleys in Sharon Davis´ biography book like this; "I got a list of songs from my promoter. He told me all the tracks that were popular in England and I just put them into medley form for few minutes because I hadn´t done them in years. In fact, when I sing them in the States people go for popcorn and hot dogs. The only way you can perform an old record in the States is if you are very animated about it because American´s don´t want memories. They´re not nostalgic people. So I can´t understand why British audiences want to hear the old stuff because for me the songs are very painful, especially those with Tammi Terrell..."

The show starts up with two songs from the "I Want you" album; "All The Way Round" and "Since I Had You". The effect of constant eating of junk food and irregular sleeping habits can bee seen on Marvins body as his appearance looks a bit sleepy and swollen. The song "Come Get To This" leads the concert onwards as an intro to an extended version of "Let´s Get It On" in which Marvin really "gets it on" in seducing the female viewers in the audience. After "Let´s Get It On" begins the chain of medleys which won´t end until the finale which is the "Distant Lover". First medley includes some biggest 60´s hits like "Pride and Joy", "I Heard It Through The Grapewine" ect.

The second medley consisted of songs from the "What´s Going On?" album starting with "Inner City Blues" and then leading through "What´s Going On?" to "Save The Children". For the final medley of classic duet songs, Marvin was joined on stage by a lady called Florence Lyles. With Florence Marvin sings through songs like "You´re All I Need" and "Ain´t No Mountain High Enough", but unfortunately Flo´s voice sounds really flat compared to original duet partners like Tammi Terrels or Kim Westons. She really doesn´t make any justice for these songs although It´s only my own oppinion. The Finale "Distant lover" is probably the best act in this concert though I think a better performance can be heard on the "Live At The London Palladium" album.
